A couple of months ago I encourage those of you who were accepted into the FYM program to read through the book of Philippians. Many of you did that and we had some good comments on the first couple of chapters of the book. We now have many more accpeted and preparing to go out in the fall. In just 3 months we will all come together here in Gainesville for a 2 week training camp. In preparation for that camp and for the 8 months on the field, I would like for us to do a study on Daniel by studying the book which bears his name and which he authored.
A Bit of Background
Daniel wrote the book around 530 BC, shortly after the capture of Babylon by Cyrus in 539. He records events that took place during Israel's captivity and encourages the people to trust in the Lord. The theme of the book seems to be God's sovereignty. A key verse there is 5:21, where Daniel talks about King Nebuchadnezzar and how he lived like a wild animal "until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and sets over them anyone he wishes." His visions then always show God as triumphant.
An Assignment
I know some of you have just finished up school and are probably tired of assignments. Well, you will be getting some throughout this study. I want you to take some time over the next week to read through the entire book in one sitting. As you read through it take some time to jot down any thoughts you might have. Take notes on some of the things God points out to you and then make your comments below. These comments don't have to be anything deep and super thought provoking, they can just be things God has brought to your mind as you read. I'm looking forward to some of the comments you'll be making. Every Friday I will post something different about Daniel and would like to hear your comments on some of the things I say. So make sure you check back here often. Enjoy the reading!
